Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. Ephesians 4:25
I don’t think this means just don’t go around fibbing, or to be honest in the world’s sense.
I think this means that we are to speak the Truth to each other. The truth? We are loved, saved, redeemed. Take up your cross. God exists. Jesus Christ died and rose again. We have hope. Eternal life is coming to all those who believe. You are new in Christ.
Love builds up. Love is the Truth. The Truth is Christ. That means anything apart from Christ is false. Sin itself is a lie that we are sufficient for ourselves, that we know what’s best. It also means that anything that isn’t Love doesn’t build up: it tears down.
Why, then, do we speak anything apart from Truth? Why do we waste words on falsehoods? Do we understand how much weight our words carry?
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. Proverbs 18:21
This is why the Church is so important. We need to be built up in Love.
Brothers and sisters, speak nothing but Truth to each other. You never know who needs to hear it, and this world speaks enough lies as it is. We are the light of the world. We are loved. You call yourself Christian, a sinner saved by Christ. So start talking like you believe it.
